Autopsy Based Epidemiological And Causative Characterisation Of Cardiac Tamponade Cases.
Abstract :
Background :Cardiac tamponade is like a ticking time bomb ready to explode and cause sudden death . In this scenario , knowing the predominantly vulnerable clinical scenario gives a head start to the interventions.Materials , Methods and Results : A two-year cross sectional study was conducted including Cardiac tamponade cases.Of the 6000 post-mortem conducted at a tertiary care centre , from January 2019 to December 2021 , 39 Cardiac tamponade cases were analysed through SPSS4 software with respect to epidemiologic characteristics and causes. Males between 51 to 60 years of age (35.48 %) died within 24 hours (70.97%) due to Cardiac tamponade. 301 to 400 cc of blood (19.35% ) in the pericardial cavity was sufficient for death. In maximum cases, heart weight was 301-350 grams (22.58%) with anterior heart wall rupture (29.03%) in Myocardial infarction followed by coronary thrombosis (32.26%) . Females (37.5%) belonged to the age group of 51 to 60 years , 62.5% succumbed within 24 hours with highly variable quantity of fluid required in the pericardial cavity sufficient to cause death , heart weight of 301 -350 grams was sufficient in 50% cases to cause death. Anterior wall rupture in 50% followed by trauma in 37.5% was the cause of haemo-pericardium.
